Redentore Venice 2025: What to do, when and where to celebrate
Did you know there’s only one month left until Redentore: Venice’s most anticipated summer celebration?
If you’ve experienced it before, you already know why locals consider it the night of the year.
If you haven’t… get ready for a weekend that blends spirituality, history, tradition, and an unforgettable spectacle.
What is the Festa del Redentore?
The Festa del Redentore is more than just a summer event; it’s one of the most heartfelt traditions for Venetians.
It began as a religious celebration to thank the Redeemer for the end of the devastating plague of 1575–1577, which decimated the population of Venice. The Senate of the Serenissima Republic vowed to build a church if the plague ceased, and so the Basilica del Santissimo Redentore, designed by Andrea Palladio, was erected on the island of Giudecca.
📅 When is Redentore 2025?
The Festa del Redentore 2025 takes place on the third weekend of July, which this year falls on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 July.
📍 Where is Redentore celebrated?
The celebration unfolds between the Giudecca Canal, St. Mark’s Basin, and around the Redentore Church. The whole city joins in: boats are decorated, locals dine outdoors on docks, terraces, or directly on the water.
One of the most iconic features is the floating bridge connecting Zattere to Giudecca, open from Saturday afternoon. Walking across it at sunset, surrounded by music, laughter, and the buzz of preparations, is simply magical.
🎆 The Highlight: Redentore Fireworks 2025
At 11:30 PM on Saturday 19 July, all eyes turn to the sky for one of Venice’s most spectacular moments of the year: the Redentore fireworks.
The reflections on the water, the silhouettes of illuminated boats, and the domes outlined against the night sky create a surreal and unforgettable scene.
Best spots to enjoy the Redentore fireworks in Venice:
- Book a table at a restaurant with a view over the basin (well in advance!)
- Rent a boat and enjoy the show from the water
- Arrive early and find a place along Le Zattere or the Giardini della Biennale
Sunday: A more spiritual side of Redentore
On Sunday 20 July, the celebration shifts to a quieter, more spiritual tone with the Solemn Mass at the Redentore Church. Many Venetians attend to renew their connection with the city’s history and faith.
💡 Local Tip:
Bring water, a fan, and a good dose of patience: the Redentore attracts thousands of people, and getting around in the evening can be tricky.
But it’s absolutely worth it. And if you can, stay a little longer after the fireworks: watching Venice slowly fall silent and dark again is pure magic.
